Liposculpture or Liposuction

Liposculpture, or liposuction, is the surgical procedure through which excess fatty tissue is removed from almost any part of the human body, in order to enhance appearance. It is the most common cosmetic surgery procedure in the world, and has the lowest number of complications. With modern improvements, only local anesthesia is needed to prevent discomfort.

Even after diet and exercise, some fat deposits resist efforts to reduce them. Those areas can be removed through liposculpture, and can range from the neck, chin, and jowls, down through the arms, abdomen, hips, back, buttocks, and thighs, to the knees, calves, and ankles. The areas that respond most favorably to liposculpture include the abdomen, hips, sides between hip and ribs, and thighs, although the neck, arms, and back are also popular liposculpture choices.

The procedure works best for those who need help with specific problem areas, but are of average weight overall. Good skin tone is also important.

Liposculpture is accomplished through a minimally invasive procedure that normally takes one to one-and-one-half hours (1 to 1 ½ hours). With modern improvements, only local anesthesia (tumescent solution anesthesia) is needed to prevent discomfort. During liposculpture:

  1. the selected area is numbed through an injection using concentrated local anesthetic
  2. a second anesthetic (tumescent solution) is injected into the fat to prepare the tissue for extraction
  3. the fatty tissue is suctioned out through a small incision (same 3mm incision that used for tumescent solution infiltration) using a tiny, thin tube called a cannula

Recovery from liposculpture is relatively fast. A person can have the procedure performed as an outpatient on a Friday and be back at work the following Monday. In addition, liposculpture has a high rate of satisfaction and a low complications rate.

As with any procedure that affects one’s appearance, liposculpture can have a positive effect on self-image and attitude. People often report feeling younger and more confident as a result of this procedure.

Recovery and Maintenance

Recovery from liposculpture is relatively fast. A person can have the procedure performed as an outpatient on a Friday and be back at work the following Monday.

In order to maintain the results of liposculpture, it is important to pay attention to diet and fitness, and to wear a special garment for several weeks after the procedure.

Diet

Once fatty tissue has been removed, it is important to eat in a way that maintains the new weight. Most women weigh themselves after liposculpture. They then use this new target weight as an ongoing guideline for monitoring their food choices and maintaining their new look.

Exercise

Exercise is also important to maintaining liposculpture results. Aerobic activity is important for overall health and circulation to the target area. Exercise for strength, especially in the target area, helps to firm up the area and maintain the new look.

Garment

A special garment for tightening the skin must be worn for several weeks after the procedure. The garment is worn over the area reduced by liposculpture. A size smaller than what one would normally wear, the garment allows the loose skin resulting from the loss of fat to tighten.

Liposculpture has a high rate of satisfaction. As with any procedure that affects one’s appearance, liposculpture can have a positive effect on self-image and attitude. People often report feeling younger and more confident as a result of this procedure.
